Biola University Projects

I held a web design intern position at Biola University in the University Communications and Marketing Department from 2009 to 2012. During that time, I learned HTML and CSS best practices and was given ample opportunity to broaden my skill-set.  Projects involved web design and development, but also flash based ads, social media page design and more. Below are several examples of the website projects that I worked on under the direction of UCM.

Parens Patriae – Senior Thesis Art Show

My senior thesis art show marked the end of collegiate studies. Though I am thankful it is finally complete, I am more thankful that all of the hard work on the project paid off in the form of visitors having genuine emotional reactions to the work that, Lord willing, will inspire them to take action, to make decisions that will effect children’s lives for the better, and in some cases, provide comfort to those who are already in the thick of foster care.

Below is the statement that accompanied the show, photographs of the installation, and the webpage containing statistics and information about how to get involved.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Mike and Sharon Gravelle adopted eleven children from foster care. After several years, authorities discovered that eight of these children were kept in cages built of wood and wire for hours and days at a time. They were made to eat in the cages. They were made to sleep in the cages. An alarm would sound when a cage door opened.

Although a growing number of individuals and families are stepping up as advocates for reform, advocates for children, and as true parents to the nation, there is still much work to be done, much darkness to be exposed, and many souls to be comforted. Let this show be a memorial to the children who have been harmed and lost by the foster care systemin the United States and a reminder of the hundreds of thousands of children served each year.

“The world can no longer be left to mere diplomats, politicians and business leaders. They have done the best they could, no doubt. But this is an age for spiritual heroes – a time for men and women to be heroic in their faith and in spiritual character and power.”

Christmas Tree Lighting Art Sale

Tomorrow evening is Biola’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and Fair & Food Drive.

I enjoy watching the ceremony, but I am also excited this year because the art department will be hosting a table with artsy things for purchase. I made a few cutesy little clay animals and will be selling two paintings(Lord willing) to help offset adoption costs. Woo!

Take us home!

Hopefully one or two of the 2,000 folks that usually attend will decide to support the art students peddling their wares. Fingers crossed!
